  If death my friend and me divide, Thou dost not, Lord, my sorrow chide, Or frown my tears to see; Restrained from passionate excess, Thou bidst me mourn in calm distress For them that rest in Thee. I feel a strong immortal hope, Which bears my mournful spirit up Beneath its mountain load; Redeemed from death, and grief, and pain, I soon shall find my friend again Within the arms of God. Pass a few fleeting moments more And death the blessing shall restore Which death has snatched away; For me Thou wilt the summons send, And give me back my parted friend In that eternal day.

• [Yoh 11:23] Within The Churchyard, Side By Side

  Within the churchyard, side by side, Are many long low graves; And some have stones set over them, On some the green grass waves. Full many a little Christian child, Woman, and man, lies there; And we pass near them every time When we go in to prayer. They cannot hear our footsteps come, They do not see us pass; They cannot feel the warm bright sun That shines upon the grass. They do not hear when the great bell Is ringing overhead; They cannot rise and come to church With us, for they are dead. But we believe a day shall come When all the dead will rise, When they who sleep down in the grass, Will ope again their eyes. For Christ our Lord was buried once, He died and rose again, He conquered death, He left the grave; And so will Christian men. So when the friends we love the best Lie in their churchyard bed, We must not cry too bitterly Over the happy dead; Because, for our dear Savior’s sake, Our sins are all forgiv’n; And Christians only fall asleep To wake again in Heav’n.

  God the Father’s only Son, And with Him in glory One, One in wisdom, One in might, Absolute and infinite; Jesu, I believe in thee, Thou art Lord and God to me. Preacher of eternal peace, Christ anointed to release, Setting wide the dungeon door, Unto sinners chained before; Jesu, I believe in Thee, Christ the Prophet sent to me.   The Master hath come, and He calls us to follow The track of the footprints He leaves on our way; Far over the mountain and through the deep hollow, The path leads us on to the mansions of day: The Master hath called us, the children who fear Him, Who march ’neath Christ’s banner, His own little band; We love Him and seek Him, we long to be near Him, And rest in the light of His beautiful land. The Master hath called us; the road may be dreary And dangers and sorrows are strewn on the track; But God’s Holy Spirit shall comfort the weary; We follow the Savior and cannot turn back; The Master hath called us, though doubt and temptation May compass our journey, we cheerfully sing: “Press onward, look upward,” through much tribulation; The children of Zion must follow the King.   Jesus wept! those tears are over, But His heart is still the same; Kinsman, Friend, and elder Brother, Is His everlasting Name. Savior, who can love like Thee, Gracious One of Bethany? When the pangs of trial seize us, When the waves of sorrow roll, I will lay my head on Jesus, Refuge of the troubled soul. Surely, none can feel like Thee, Weeping One of Bethany! Jesus wept! and still in glory, He can mark each mourner’s tear; Loving to retrace the story Of the hearts He solaced here. Lord, when I am called to die, Let me think of Bethany. Jesus wept! that tear of sorrow Is a legacy of love; Yesterday, today, tomorrow, He the same doth ever prove, Thou art all in all to me, Loving One of Bethany! Who is this in silence bending O’er a dark sepulchral cave? Sympathetic sorrow blending With the tears around that grave? Christ the Lord is standing by, At the tomb of Bethany.

  Jesus was standing beside a grave, Weeping, but knowing His power to save; “Take ye away now the stone from the door,” And Christ will His power display. Refrain They rolled the stone away, For Christ was there that day, And called upon a man to leave the darkened grave. We’ll roll the stone away, For He is here today, And waits to show His mighty power, His power to save. Jesus is speaking to you in song, Asking why you have delayed so long? While men are lying in grave-clothes of sin, For whom Jesus died on the cross. • [Yoh 11:43] One Named Lazarus

  One named Lazarus was sick; his two sisters feared he’d die. So to Jesus they sent word, hoping He would soon come nigh. But when He received their word, two more days He did abide. He said, “This won’t end in death; rather, I’ll be glorified. This is for God’s glory great; through it I’ll be glorified.” Now when Jesus finally came, Laz’rus had been dead four days. Martha went to welcome Him, asking why He’d stayed away. She said, “Lord, if You’d been here, my dear brother still would live. But I know that even now, all you ask, God will now give. Though he’s dead, yet still I know, all You ask, God will now give.” “Resurrection and the life—I am both,” Jesus did say. “He who does believe in Me, he will live beyond the grave. He who lives, believes in Me, he will ne’er to death succumb.” Martha said, “You are the Christ; You’re the One who was to come. You’re the Christ, the Son of God; You’re the One Who was to come.” Martha then her sister called; Mary went to meet the Lord. When she reached Him, knelt in tears, seeking comfort from His word. Jesus, deeply moved, did ask, “Where have you his body laid?” And He wept when He did see, for His love was very great. Jesus wept and shared their grief, for His love was very great. Jesus then approached the tomb. “Take away the stone,” He said. “But,” said Martha, “there’s a stench, for four days he has been dead.” Jesus said, “You now will see God’s great glory—just believe.” So they took away the stone, and he prayed, “May they believe; Father, thank You, You have heard; may they now in Me believe.” Jesus then did give command; in a loud voice He did say, “Laz’rus, come out of the tomb!” And the dead man did obey. Both his hands and feet were bound, and a cloth did hide his face. “Take the grave clothes; let him go,” Jesus said to those amazed. “Said I not, believe and see God’s great glory in this place?” Just as Jesus gave new life to a man when he was dead, He can do the same for all who believe what He has said. For we all in sin are dead; resurrection life we need. Jesus died and rose again, that we might from sin be freed. All who put their trust in Him will not die but live indeed.

  We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; He chastens and hastens His will to make known. The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing. Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own. Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine; So from the beginning the fight we were winning; Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine! We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant, And pray that Thou still our Defender will be. Let Thy congregation escape tribulation; Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
